Legal secretaries in our office spend the majority of their time working on criminal assignments, although they are given civil duties as they progress in the office. They work closely with their attorneys to prepare discovery and other legal documents which are filed at court, and they are responsible for preparing the criminal files and ensuring that all the necessary reports, audios, videos, and other evidence have been ordered and obtained for a trial. There are three Divisions which perform prosecution work, and typically, each Division handles at least three criminal court calendars, with between seven and nine attorneys.

We expect our legal secretaries to be able to manage a high-volume workload while meeting tight deadlines; prioritize those heavy workloads; and move from task to task as needed - all while maintaining a high degree of accuracy and confidentiality. Our legal secretaries have a good knowledge of legal terminology, forms, methods, and procedures; legal/litigation procedures; citation rules; rules of the court; the discovery process; trial preparation; processes; and case file management. While a legal or criminal justice background is not necessary, we do require our applicants to provide two certifications from Job Service verifying that they can type at least 50 wpm.
